Chuderhüsi Tower, Wooden observation tower in Röthenbach im Emmental, Switzerland.
The Chuderhüsi Tower is a wooden observation tower in Röthenbach im Emmental, in the canton of Bern, standing about 42 meters tall. It sits on a forested hill and gives a broad view over the rolling Emmental countryside in all directions.
An older tower once stood on this hill but was destroyed by fire. The current structure was built as a replacement and has been open to visitors ever since.
The name Chuderhüsi comes from the local Bernese dialect and refers to a small, rough shelter, hinting at the rustic character of this hilltop spot. Visitors standing at the top can see the typical Emmental farmland below, with scattered farmhouses and forested ridges that define this part of Switzerland.
The tower is reached on foot via forest trails, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. Clear days offer the best visibility from the top, making the climb more rewarding.
A tower of this height built entirely from wood is quite rare for a public viewing structure in Switzerland. The construction follows traditional carpentry methods that are seldom used for buildings of this scale today.
