Alt-Signau, medieval castle ruin

Alt-Signau is a castle ruin perched on a hilltop between the Emmental and Aare valleys, built from stone and surrounded by walking trails. The remaining foundation walls still reveal the original layout of residential and defensive structures.

The castle was built around 1130 and served as the residence of the Barons of Signau until the mid-14th century, when they relocated to a new fortress at Neu-Signau. This move reflected shifting military and political priorities of the medieval period.

The ruins stand as a protected cultural landmark that reflects how medieval nobles shaped this landscape through their choice of settlement and defense strategies.

The site is accessible via marked walking trails from Bowil village and offers open access for exploration. Wear sturdy footwear and bring weather-appropriate clothing, especially after rain when the hillside may be slippery.

The fortress once commanded a vital trade route linking Emmental to the Aare valley, underscoring the economic importance of its position. This aspect is often overlooked, yet it explains why the family invested in building here.
