Domodossola–Locarno railway line, railway line in Switzerland and Italy
The Domodossola-Locarno railway is a roughly 52 kilometer line connecting Italy and Switzerland, passing through Ossola Valley and the Canton of Ticino. Trains on this route cross 83 bridges and pass through 31 tunnels while traveling past vineyards, forests, and small villages.
The line opened to the public in 1923 through cooperation between Italian and Swiss efforts. It has been operating for nearly a hundred years and continues to serve as a vital link between the two countries and their regions.
The railway takes its name from its two endpoints: the Italian town of Domodossola and the Swiss town of Locarno. Traveling by train offers glimpses of daily village life, from traditional houses to local markets and customs that define this border region.
Trains operate in white and blue colors and travel slowly to allow passengers to enjoy the scenery along the route. Tickets and information are readily available at Domodossola railway station or through local information points.
The route is especially beautiful in autumn when leaves turn red and gold, transforming the landscape into a colorful display. In winter, snow covers the region and creates a quiet, calm setting perfect for a relaxing train journey.
