Daubenhorn, Mountain summit in Valais, Switzerland
Daubenhorn is a prominent peak in the Bernese Alps positioned between Gemmi Pass and Rinderhorn. The area offers diverse hiking and climbing routes suitable for various skill levels with sweeping views across the surrounding mountain landscape.
The peak was once a remote high mountain until modern cable cars and hiking infrastructure were developed in the Gemmi region. These developments transformed it from a difficult destination into a popular spot for mountaineers and climbers.
The mountain features Switzerland's largest via ferrata route, extending 2,600 meters in length with 216 meters of metal ladders for technical climbing.
The Gemmi cable car from Leukerbad provides direct access to the summit and saves considerable time on the ascent. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes and be cautious in changing weather, as conditions at the top can become challenging quickly.
At the base of the peak sits Daubensee, a glacial lake without visible outlets that remains frozen for much of the year. The lake is a quiet, isolated spot that contrasts with the busier hiking trails in the region.
