Ammertenhorn, Mountain summit in Bernese Alps, Switzerland.
Ammertenhorn is a 2666 meter (8747 foot) peak in the Bernese Alps featuring steep northwest and west faces. These dramatic walls rise roughly 1000 meters (3281 feet) above the surrounding terrain.
The peak sits in the historic Obersimmental region of Canton Bern and now falls within the Frutigen-Niedersimmental administrative area. This shift reflects how mountain communities have been reorganized over time.
The mountain is known locally as Ammertehore in Swiss dialect, reflecting how the peak is woven into the regional language and identity.
The Ammertenhütte hut sits at 1830 meters (6004 feet) and offers shelter for climbers approaching the summit. The terrain is steep and requires solid footing and climbing experience to navigate safely.
The peak actually consists of two summits: an eastern point at 2665 meters and a western point at 2653 meters. This double-topped feature adds an unexpected twist to the climb that surprises many visitors.
