Pointe de la Plaine Morte, Mountain summit in Bern, Switzerland
Pointe de la Plaine Morte is a mountain summit in the Bernese Alps, situated between the cantons of Bern and Valais at an elevation of 2,927 meters (9,603 feet). A cable car system from Les Violettes reaches an upper station at 2,882 meters, from which a short walk leads to the peak.
The area has long been part of passage routes between the valleys of the region. Since 2014, a weather radar operated by MeteoSwiss has been installed at the summit to monitor conditions across the Swiss Alps.
The peak belongs to the Crans-Montana ski area, where visitors come for winter sports during the snowy months. You can see ski runs and lifts scattered across the slope, shaping how the mountain is used year-round.
The cable car from Les Violettes is an easy way to reach the upper elevation, leaving just a short walk to complete. Weather at the summit changes fast, so bring layers and check conditions before heading up.
The peak overlooks the Plaine Morte Glacier, a sprawling ice mass that drains into two different river systems on opposite sides. This dual drainage pattern makes the glacier a notable hydrological feature in the Alps.
