Siebenhengste-Hohgant-Höhle, Cave network in Bern, Switzerland
Siebenhengste-Hohgant-Höhle is a cave system in limestone formations north of Lake Thun between the villages of Eriz and Habkern. The network includes 42 separate entrances and extends over 160 kilometers through the mountain range.
Exploration began in 1966 when Club Jurassien from La Chaux-de-Fonds discovered three initial entrances to the system. Since then, speleologists from Switzerland and Belgium have systematically surveyed and mapped the network.
Multiple speleological clubs from Switzerland and Belgium have contributed to mapping and documenting this substantial underground system over several decades.
Visiting requires experienced cavers and specialized equipment due to the system's complexity and depth. Local clubs offer guided tours and support for interested visitors.
Researchers are investigating a possible connection to Bärenschacht, a nearby spring, which could extend the system by about 84 kilometers. This potential link would make it one of Europe's longest caves.
