Wallfahrtskirche Maria Licht, Baroque pilgrimage church in Trun, Switzerland
Wallfahrtskirche Maria Licht is a baroque church perched on a hillside, divided into three sections: the choir, front choir, and nave arranged in sequence. The interior walls are covered with colorful frescoes that depict religious scenes in a lively baroque style.
This baroque structure replaced an earlier chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian that stood at the same location. The church has dominated the hillside above Trun for more than 300 years.
The name Maria Licht honors the Virgin Mary as a bearer of light, a meaning visible in the bright interior spaces and painted surfaces. Visitors notice how daylight streams through the windows to illuminate the colorful scenes covering the walls.
The church sits on a hilltop outside the village and is accessible by foot via a hiking path that ascends from Trun. Visitors should be aware this is an active pilgrimage site where services may occasionally limit public access.
The interior holds the largest collection of votive tablets in the canton, with each small board representing a pilgrim's prayer or gratitude. These handwritten records offer a glimpse into centuries of personal prayers left behind by worshippers.
