Ahorn von Trun, Historical maple tree in Trun, Switzerland
The maple of Trun is a sycamore maple standing next to Saint Anna Chapel on the Court of Honor, located above the train station of Trun in the Surselva region. The current tree grows at the same location where a much older tree once stood before it fell in 1870.
The original tree was the location where representatives gathered in 1424 to establish the Grey League, a key political alliance in Swiss history. This moment made the place a symbol for how that powerful alliance came into being.
The Court of Honor displays memorial plaques honoring local figures from the Grisons area, which visitors notice while walking around the chapel. These remembrances shape how the space looks and reflects the region's past through the people commemorated there.
The location is easy to visit since it sits above the train station and is visible from the Court of Honor. Those who want to learn more about the original tree's history can visit the Museum Sursilvan, where remains of the old trunk are displayed.
The current tree grew from a seed of the original tree that stood witness to an important historical gathering in 1424. This direct connection links today's tree to that crucial moment in Swiss history.
