Piz Val Gronda, Mountain summit in Obersaxen Mundaun, Switzerland
Piz Val Gronda is a mountain peak in the Graubünden region that rises to 2,818 meters elevation and ranks as the second highest point in the Obersaxen Mundaun municipality. A marked trail leads from lower elevations through intermediate stations and ends with a short chain-assisted scramble to reach the top.
A cable car system was built in 2013 to connect the Vesil valley directly to the summit, marking a turning point in how people could reach this mountain. This infrastructure brought significant changes to visitor access while being designed to minimize damage to the landscape.
The name comes from the Romansh language spoken in this region, showing how local communities have shaped their surroundings through centuries of settlement. You'll find these linguistic roots reflected in place names throughout the area.
You can reach the summit either by cable car from below or by hiking from St Martin, with the hiking route taking considerably more time and involving several stages. Sturdy footwear and preparation for changing weather are important, especially on the exposed sections higher up on the trail.
The cable car system spans an exceptionally long distance relative to the number of support towers, stretching 2,452 meters with just two supporting structures. The cabins are heated and can accommodate 150 passengers at once, which is remarkable for a mountain installation at this elevation.
