Vullierens Castle, Medieval castle and winery in Vullierens, Switzerland
Vullierens Castle is a former fortress and winery estate in the municipality of Vullierens in canton Vaud, surrounded by approximately one hundred hectares of gardens and vineyard land. The property offers views toward Lake Geneva and the Alps while combining historical structures with modern garden designs and art installations.
The current structure was built between 1706 and 1712 from designs by Gabriel-Henri de Mestral, replacing a fortified residence that dated to 1308. Two original towers from the earlier fortification remained standing and continue to define the castle's appearance.
The gardens showcase seasonal blooms and house a substantial collection of iris varieties alongside outdoor artworks. Visitors can encounter these artistic elements while strolling through the different themed garden sections.
The grounds are largely accessible on foot, with marked pathways through the various garden sections and toward the castle itself. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the terrain is hilly and exploring can take several hours.
The cellars of the property date to the early 18th century and contain traditional oak vessels and pressing equipment that demonstrate historical winemaking. These underground spaces preserve insights into the craft methods that have been used on the estate for generations.
