De Mestral château, Historical château in Echichens, Switzerland.
De Mestral château is a stone fortress set on elevated ground at 526 meters in Echichens, displaying 17th century architectural features. The complex consists of two original separate buildings that form the property.
The original fortified structure dates from 1308, when Pierre de Duin received permission to build the estate. Continuous family ownership remained unbroken for more than 700 years.
The rooms display Aubusson tapestries and Chinese wallpapers that blend European and Asian artistic traditions. Walking through the interior, you see how these decorative choices create layers of refined taste collected over centuries.
The property maintains 4.6 hectares of vineyards producing Grand Cru Saint-Saphorin-sur-Morges AOC La Côte wines using current environmental standards. Visitors can see the vineyard operations and explore the surrounding landscape.
Georges de Mestral, who inherited the castle in 1966, later invented the hook-and-loop fastening system used worldwide today. This breakthrough invention emerged during his time at the estate.
