Morges Castle, Medieval castle in Morges, Switzerland
Morges Castle sits on the shores of Lake Geneva with four round corner towers arranged in a square formation. The fortress houses five museums containing military collections and various historical exhibitions.
Louis of Savoy ordered the fortress built in 1286 to establish military control over the newly founded city and protect trade routes. After Bern conquered the region in the 16th century, the fortress gradually lost its defensive role.
The castle houses museums displaying weapons and armor from different periods that tell stories of regional defense and conflict. Visitors can also see exhibits dedicated to pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski, who lived nearby.
The castle is open Tuesday through Sunday for visitors, with extended hours during summer months. The museums are easily accessible on foot and located right by the waterfront.
The fortress contains a rare preserved medieval fortified kitchen from the 13th century, one of only a few in Europe. After Bern conquered the region, this space was transformed into an observation platform.
