Corbières Castle, Castle in Corbières, Switzerland
The Château de Corbières, also known as Baillival Castle, is a bailiff's castle in the village of Corbières in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. It consists of a rectangular main building with a Bernese roof, cross-mullioned windows, and a turret-like annex at the southeast corner, surrounded by walls that enclose courtyards and gardens.
The castle was built in the 13th century as a second stronghold for the lords of Corbières. It was rebuilt in the 16th century and restored in 1750, and it served as the residence of the bailiffs of Fribourg.
The castle is a landmark of Corbières and a source of local pride. Its facade bears several coats of arms of Fribourg and its bailiffs, which recall the period when the castle was the seat of local authority.
The castle is privately owned, so visitors can only view it from the outside. It stands near the road from Fribourg to Bulle, on the east bank of the Greyerzersee, and can be reached on foot from the village center.
The castle's name, Baillival, comes from the bailiffs who governed the region on behalf of Fribourg. The building is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
