Wuzhou, Commercial river port in eastern Guangxi, China

The city spans 12,588 square kilometers at the confluence of the Gui River and Xun River, forming the major Xi River waterway system.

Established as Guangxin county in 111 BCE, the settlement changed its name to Cangwu in 583 CE before becoming Wuzhou during the Tang dynasty.

The population speaks primarily Cantonese dialects, reflecting strong cultural connections with neighboring Guangdong province despite being in the Guangxi region.

Transportation includes the Nanning-Guangzhou high-speed railway, national highways 207 and 321, and Wuzhou Xijiang Airport serving major Chinese cities.

Wuzhou produces 80 percent of China's artificial gems and 70 percent of the global supply, making it the largest synthetic gemstone center worldwide.
