Dongjiang Dam, arch dam
Dongjiang Dam is a large arch dam built across a river valley in Zixing, with a concrete structure that connects two mountain sides. The dam holds back a massive volume of water and features spillways that release water during high flow periods, creating mist that drifts through the valley.
The structure was built decades ago to control river water flow and support power generation for the region. It was the first double-curved thin-shell arch dam built by China and gained international recognition for its engineering design.
The name Dongjiang refers to the river that has shaped this region for centuries. Visitors can observe traditional ways of life along the banks, especially in Huangcao, where people still live in houses built directly over the water and practice old crafts and skills.
Visitors reach the site most easily by taking a bus from Chenzhou to Zixing and then local buses to the area, or by driving and following signs from main roads. Parking for cars and buses is available around the site, and it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection and insect repellent.
The dam is the first of its kind with a double-curved thin-shell arch design developed by China that gained international standing. When the spillway gates open, the falling water creates a spectacular mist that fills the entire valley, offering a natural display that visitors often photograph.
