Gaoyi Ridge, Mountain park in Suxian District, China.
Gaoyi Ridge is a mountain park in Suxian District, Hunan Province, shaped by red sandstone cliffs, natural streams, and dense forest cover. The terrain shifts between steep rocky sections and more open wooded areas connected by a network of paths and viewing platforms.
The red rock formations at Gaoyi Ridge were shaped over a very long period by the layering and gradual erosion of sandstone, a process typical of a broader geological belt found across southern China. This type of landscape, known as Danxia, was officially recognized as a natural heritage category in the early 21st century.
The red rock slopes of Gaoyi Ridge are known to local people as a source of medicinal plants gathered according to the seasons. This practice is part of everyday life in the surrounding communities and shapes the way people relate to the land.
The park has trails of varying difficulty and several viewing platforms spread across the terrain, so it helps to check the route before starting out. Late afternoon light tends to bring out the color of the red cliffs, making that time of day a good choice for walking the exposed sections.
Wild goats live on the steep cliff faces and can sometimes be spotted from the viewing platforms, moving across rock surfaces that most visitors would not attempt. Their dark coats stand out against the red sandstone, making them easy to notice once you know where to look.
