Yunmen Temple, Buddhist temple near Rucheng Town, China
Yunmen Temple is a Buddhist temple complex near Rucheng in Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County. The site includes multiple buildings such as the Gate of Heavenly Kings and the Daxiong Palace, constructed following traditional Chinese architectural methods.
Master Hsu Yun began a major reconstruction project here in 1943. Over the following years, numerous new structures were added to restore the complex to its former prominence.
The temple serves as the birthplace of the Yunmen school, one of the five principal schools of Chan Buddhism. Visitors today can experience the spiritual importance that this influential Buddhist tradition continues to hold within the region.
The temple is best reached by taking high-speed rail to Shaoguan City followed by local transportation options. The grounds are open during daylight hours and can be explored at a comfortable pace.
The reconstruction between 1943 and 1951 combined building principles from the Qing period with new design elements. This blend of different eras makes the architecture of the complex particularly interesting to observe.
