Dongjiang Lake, body of water
Dongjiang Lake is a large man-made reservoir in Zixing with clear water surrounded by gently rolling hills and mountains. Small islands covered in green trees dot the surface, and the water depth averages about 50 meters (164 feet), making it one of the region's most substantial bodies of water.
The lake was created by building a curved concrete dam, which was China's first arch dam project designed to store water for nearby cities and control flooding. The surrounding region has a history spanning over 1,800 years, with connections to ancient dynasties and cultural movements.
The lake's name comes from the river that feeds it, connecting the place to local geography and identity. People in the area have developed customs around the water, including special teas and hot springs that have been valued for generations.
