Qibao Old Town, Ancient water town in Minhang District, Shanghai, China
Qibao Old Town is a historic settlement in Shanghai featuring narrow stone streets, traditional buildings, and waterways characteristic of Jiangnan architecture along the Puhui Tang River. The compact layout preserves the feel of an earlier market town with intact structures from multiple periods.
The settlement began as Dingjia Village and grew into a market town during the Northern Song Dynasty when Qibao Temple moved to this location. This event attracted merchants and settlers who established it as a trading center.
The shadow puppet museum displays centuries of regional puppet craft through colorful performances and exhibitions that reflect local artistic traditions. These puppets show how craftspeople in the area have kept their art alive over generations.
The town is located about 12 kilometers from central Shanghai and is easiest to reach by subway. After exiting at Qibao Station, a short walk of about 300 meters brings you to the heart of the old town.
Inside the Bell Tower sits a massive bronze bell from the Ming Dynasty, standing about 1.9 meters tall and weighing one ton. This historic bell rings once each New Year's Eve, marking a meaningful moment for the entire community.
