Xiong'an New Area, State-level development zone in Hebei, China.
Xiong'an New Area is a state-level development zone that spans three counties south of Beijing in Hebei Province. The territory spreads around Baiyang Lake and connects rural landscapes with new urban districts, office complexes, and wide green spaces.
The central government announced the creation of this zone in April 2017 to reduce congestion in the capital and relocate government functions. The planning model draws from earlier development zones such as Shenzhen and Shanghai Pudong, which emerged from the 1980s and 1990s onward.
The name Xiongan combines syllables from the three counties Xiong, Rongcheng, and Anxin that form the new district together. Visitors see modern buildings housing technology companies and research institutes that relocated parts of their offices from the capital.
The zone lies southwest of Beijing and is well connected through several expressways and a high-speed rail line. Visitors find signs in English and Chinese within the new districts, while some rural parts remain less developed.
The master plan requires that no residential or office building stands farther than 300 meters (980 feet) from a park, a bus stop, or a school. Baiyang Lake remains the largest freshwater reservoir in northern China and shapes the landscape between the new urban quarters.
