Javořice Transmitter, TV and radio transmitter station in Mrákotín, Czech Republic
The Javořice Transmitter is a radio and television broadcasting station built on the Javořice peak in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands of the Czech Republic. The concrete mast stands 166 meters tall and sits on one of the highest points in the region.
The station began broadcasting in 1989, during a period when Czechoslovakia was expanding its national broadcasting network. Placing it on the Javořice summit was a deliberate choice to improve signal coverage across the interior of the country.
The transmitter stands on the Javořice summit, the highest point in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, which gives it a strong presence in the region. Travelers passing through the surrounding countryside often spot the slender tower from far away and use it as a natural landmark.
The Javořice summit is reachable by foot trails from the area around Mrákotín, though the exposed hilltop means weather can change quickly. Sturdy footwear and a waterproof layer are a good idea regardless of the season.
The Javořice is the highest peak in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands at around 837 meters, and that position allows the station to send a single signal that simultaneously covers Prague, Brno, and Jihlava. That rare geographic reach was the main reason this particular hilltop was chosen over other candidate sites.
