Biberach an der Riss

Biberach an der Riß is a district capital in Upper Swabia, situated between Ulm and Lake Constance along the river it is named after. The old town follows a medieval layout with narrow lanes and squares, while newer districts expand to the south and west.

The town became an Imperial Free City in 1281 and retained that status until 1803, when it was assigned to Baden. During the Napoleonic Wars it changed hands several times before passing to Württemberg in 1806.

The Braith-Mali-Museum, housed in a 16th-century structure, presents extensive collections of archaeology, regional history, art, and natural specimens.

The old town is easy to explore on foot, with most sights within a few minutes of each other. On sunny days a walk along the Riß takes you through parks and green spaces.

Each July the nine-day Schützenfest brings street parades, fairground events and competitions to the town. Thousands of visitors from the region attend what ranks among the largest festivals of its kind in Upper Swabia.
