Schleißheim airfield, Aviation museum and airfield in Oberschleißheim, Germany
Schleißheim airfield is an aviation museum and active airport north of Munich with three large aircraft hangars and specialized maintenance facilities for wooden and metal planes. The site includes fuel storage capacity and provides space for six air sports clubs that regularly conduct flight operations.
The airfield was founded in 1912 for the Royal Bavarian Air Force and served military purposes during both world wars. After the Second World War, the facility came under American control and later became a site of continuous flight operations.
The Flugwerft Schleißheim Museum displays more than 70 aviation objects, including historic gliders, modern aircraft, flying boats, and rockets. These items tell the story of German flight technology and show how aircraft construction changed over time.
Visiting offers access to aircraft at different stages of development and maintenance areas that show how restoration works. It is helpful to allow enough time to explore the large hangars and outdoor areas, especially if flight activities are taking place.
The site is Germany's oldest continuously operating airfield and today serves as a base for Federal Police helicopters. This dual role as a historic flight center and modern security facility is rarely found in Europe.
