Centre for International Light Art, Art gallery in Unna, Germany
The Centre for International Light Art is an art museum in Unna, Germany, housed in a former brewery and dedicated entirely to light as an artistic medium. Most of the exhibition spaces sit in the underground vaulted cellars of the old building, where permanent installations are presented in near-total darkness.
The building was originally part of the Lindenbrauerei, a brewery that operated in Unna for many decades during the 19th and 20th centuries. After the brewery closed, the site was converted and the museum opened in 2014, making it one of the first institutions of its kind.
The works on display were created specifically for the underground spaces of this former brewery, meaning they cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. Each room was conceived as a self-contained experience, shaped around the physical conditions of that particular space.
The underground cellars are dark and can feel narrow in places, so wearing sturdy footwear and moving slowly is a good idea. Wheelchair access is limited in some areas, so it is worth contacting the museum in advance to understand which spaces are reachable.
The vaulted cellars were left largely untouched during the conversion, so the raw stone walls and low ceilings are still visible and form the backdrop for the artworks. Some installations respond to the movement of visitors, which means the experience shifts depending on how many people are present and how they move through the space.
