Lindenbrauerei, Cultural center and former brewery in Unna, Germany.
Lindenbrauerei is a former brewery complex in Unna now operating as a multifaceted cultural center. The site contains several distinct areas including a concert hall housed in a former cooling facility, spaces for the public library and adult education programs, a city archive, and an art gallery in underground vaults where international artists regularly present work.
The site was founded in 1859 as brewery Rasche & Beckmann and produced beer for more than 100 years before closing in 1979. The city of Unna then acquired the building and transformed it into a cultural center while preserving its industrial architecture and character.
The name Lindenbrauerei references the linden tree, traditionally associated with gathering places and community meeting points. Today visitors experience the site as a social hub where art installations and cultural events shape how people interact with the space.
The site has multiple entrances and zones serving different purposes from cultural programs to library use. Visitors should note that different sections operate on separate schedules, so it helps to check beforehand which area you want to visit.
A small brewery on the site has produced beer since 2002 using traditional methods, sold exclusively in the on-site Schalander pub. This natural, unfiltered beer links the location's long brewing heritage to its present cultural purpose.
