Unna, Administrative capital in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Unna is a district town in the eastern Ruhr area, roughly 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Dortmund. The town divides into several parts, including the center, Königsborn, Massen, Afferde and Billmerich.
The first written record dates from 1032, when the settlement lay on the old trade road called Hellweg. Later the town joined the Hanseatic League, strengthening its role in long-distance trade.
The Centre for International Light Art uses old brewery rooms where light objects are built into the space. Visitors move through dimly lit passages and see how artists work with light, shadow and architecture.
Many residents commute to Dortmund or other nearby cities for work, thanks to good transport links. Visitors exploring the center find shops and cafés, while the outer districts are quieter and more residential.
The Königsborn district has mineral springs that once supported a small health resort. Geologists have studied the sources and confirmed that the spring water does contain particular minerals.
