New Town Hall, Gothic Revival town hall at Marienplatz, Munich, Germany
The New Town Hall stands at Marienplatz with a main facade stretching about 100 meters and rising to approximately 85 meters tall. It houses around 400 rooms for city employees and offers visitors elevator access to an observation deck with views across Munich.
Architect Georg von Hauberrisser designed this building in 1867 when he was just 25 years old, choosing a Gothic Revival style. Construction and decoration took over 40 years to complete, finishing in 1909.
The Glockenspiel in the tower performs three times daily, with 32 life-sized figures depicting key moments from Munich's past. Crowds gather at the facade to watch this mechanical display come to life.
Visitors can reach the observation deck comfortably by elevator for clear views across the city. Plan to visit during daylight hours and fair weather to get the best sight lines.
A mosaic labyrinth set into the courtyard floor often goes unnoticed by passing visitors. The Staircase of Ages nearby represents different stages of human life through its symbolic design.
