Karlsruhe Zoo, Municipal zoo and gardens in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Karlsruhe Zoo is a facility spanning about 38 hectares where animal care and garden design are woven together. The grounds feature water features and diverse plant areas that form the setting for the various enclosures.
This facility was founded in the 1860s when breeders and local supporters brought a project to life, made possible through grand ducal backing. From this beginning grew a place that continues to combine animals and gardens.
The zoo lets visitors experience animals surrounded by carefully designed gardens that flow throughout the grounds. The way water features and planted areas blend with the animal enclosures creates a sense of nature woven into the city.
Visitors can access the grounds from two entrances: one in the north near the festival grounds area and one in the south near the railway station. The best time to explore is in the morning when light is favorable and animals are more active.
The grounds include an outer section called Tierpark Oberwald that expands the experience with additional animals and more natural spaces. This extra area offers a different character and lets visitors see different approaches to animal care.
