Altmarkt 4–6, Cultural heritage building complex at Altmarkt Square, Dresden, Germany.
Altmarkt 4-6 is a building complex along the eastern side of Altmarkt Square in Dresden that spans roughly 100 meters (330 feet) across the plaza. The ensemble combines shops and restaurants on lower floors with approximately 120 residential units above and connects to nearby buildings through covered walkways.
Following Dresden's destruction in 1945, architects designed and constructed this complex between 1953 and 1956 as part of the city's reconstruction. The building adhered to strict height regulations that preserved the historic proportions of Altmarkt Square.
The ground-floor arcades and shop windows with residential units above shape how people move through and use this square today. This mix of commerce and living creates an active streetfront that reflects the everyday rhythm of the city.
The complex is easy to reach and sits in the heart of the city near other attractions. Visitors can walk through the arcaded passages freely and explore the shops and cafes without paying any entrance fees.
The arcaded passages were a deliberate design choice to create sheltered pathways that work year-round in the region's climate. Today these covered walkways form a practical connection between street sides while inviting people to linger and shop.
