Wertach, market municipality in the district of Oberallgäu, Bavaria, Germany
Wertach is a market municipality in Upper Swabia in southern Bavaria, situated at the base of the Grunten mountain. The town spreads across elevations from 915 to 1695 meters and is surrounded by mountains, forests, and meadows that are largely protected natural areas.
Wertach first appeared in written records in 955 and gained market privileges in 1423. The settlement was ruled by the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg before becoming part of Bavaria in 1803 during territorial reforms.
The town maintains traditions like raising the maypole in spring and local yodeling that continue to be part of daily life. These customs shape how residents connect with each other and their surroundings.
The town is best explored on foot, as narrow lanes and small paths define the village center. Hiking trails around the Grunten mountain offer various difficulty levels, and Grintensee lake nearby provides water activities and swimming during warmer months.
A historic blacksmith shop has operated continuously for more than 370 years, offering visitors the chance to watch metalwork and purchase cast iron items made using traditional techniques. This working forge represents one of the region's oldest continuous crafts.
