Wertach, market municipality in the district of Oberallgäu, Bavaria, Germany
Wertach is a market municipality in the Oberallgäu district of southern Bavaria, set among mountains and forests at the foot of the Grunten. The village sits on a high plateau and is surrounded by meadows and protected natural areas that shape its rural character.
Wertach first appeared in written records in 955 and was granted market rights in 1423. For centuries it belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg before joining Bavaria in 1803 through territorial reforms.
Each spring, residents gather to raise a maypole in the village center, a tradition that brings the whole community together. Local yodeling groups are still active today and can be heard at seasonal festivals throughout the year.
The village center is easy to explore on foot, where narrow lanes and small paths connect the main areas. Trails around the Grunten lead to different parts of the surrounding hills, and the nearby Gruntensee lake is a good spot for swimming when the weather is warm.
A blacksmith shop in Wertach has been operating without interruption for more than 370 years, making it one of the oldest working forges in the region. Visitors can watch metalwork being done by hand and buy cast iron objects made using the same methods as centuries ago.
