Werneck, market municipality of Germany in Bavaria
Werneck is a market municipality in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, situated between Schweinfurt and Würzburg. It is made up of several districts and is crossed by the Wern river.
Werneck was first recorded in 1223, while the district of Eßleben appears in documents as far back as 772. The area was ruled by the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg before joining Bavaria in 1803.
The name Werneck comes from the Wern river, which runs through the municipality. In spring, locals and visitors gather for festivals with music and theater that take place across the area.
Werneck Castle and its park are easy to reach on foot and sit near the center of the municipality. The surrounding countryside is covered by marked hiking and cycling paths that connect the different districts.
In Egenhausen, one of the districts, a center dedicated to traditional Franconian stone wayside shrines holds a collection gathered from across the region. The cycling path along the Wern river passes through fruit-growing land and tells the story of local farming practices along the way.
