Sankt Goarshausen, Administrative center in Rhine Valley, Germany
Sankt Goarshausen sits on the eastern Rhine bank, displaying medieval buildings set against steep vineyard slopes. The old town preserves narrow lanes and traditional stone houses from different periods that overlook the river.
The place began in Roman times as a trading post on the Rhine and later became an important administrative center. The two medieval fortresses above the town developed in later centuries and continue to define the landscape.
The town maintains Germanic Protestant traditions, with religious practices representing over 60 percent of the local population's cultural identity.
The town is easiest to reach by regular ferry from Sankt Goar on the opposite Rhine bank. The old town is easy to explore on foot, while hiking paths lead into the surrounding vineyards and up to the castles.
Two medieval castles loom above the town: Burg Katz and Burg Maus, with the latter remaining in a less-visited condition. Burg Maus is reachable by hiking trail and offers views across the entire Rhine valley without the crowds that Burg Katz attracts.
