St. Stephen's Church, Gothic parish church in Mainz-Altstadt, Germany
St. Stephen's Church is a Gothic parish church in Mainz-Altstadt featuring three naves with choirs positioned at each end. An octagonal bell tower rises above the western section of the building.
An archbishop founded the original structure in the 10th century as a place of worship, while the current building was completed in the 14th century. The construction reflects the religious and architectural priorities of the medieval period.
The stained glass windows inside depict Old Testament scenes in shades of blue and were created by Marc Chagall in the late twentieth century. These modern artworks create a striking contrast within the medieval stone structure.
The church is open to visitors who wish to explore its architecture and artworks. Guided tours can be arranged through the local tourism office.
A baptismal font from the 14th century continues to be used in ceremonies today, linking modern worship practices to medieval craftsmanship. This object demonstrates how the building maintains its original purpose.
