Shrine of the Three Kings, Medieval reliquary in Cologne Cathedral, Germany

The gilded sarcophagus measures 220 centimeters in length, featuring intricate gold sculptures and over 1,000 precious stones and beads on its surface.

The relics arrived in Cologne in 1164 when Emperor Frederick Barbarossa presented them to Archbishop Rainald of Dassel after taking them from Milan.

The shrine contains figures representing Biblical scenes, prophets, and apostles, crafted by medieval goldsmith Nicholas of Verdun between 1180 and 1225.

The reliquary stands above the high altar of Cologne Cathedral, where visitors can view it during regular cathedral opening hours.

The examination of 1864 revealed ancient silk wrappings from Palmyra surrounding the bones, along with coins from Archbishop Philip's era.
