Saale, Administrative district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
Saale is a district in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, with Merseburg as its administrative seat. The district sits in the central part of the state, crossed by the river that gives it its name, and covers a mix of towns, villages and farming land.
The current district was formed in 2007 when the former districts of Merseburg-Querfurt and Saalkreis merged. This reorganization was part of a broader reform of local government in Saxony-Anhalt that reduced the number of districts across the state.
The name of the district comes from the river that runs through it, which has shaped the region for centuries. Along its banks, old settlements still carry names that point to the area's long connection with salt trading and river transport.
Merseburg is easy to reach by train from Halle, which also has a major station with connections across Germany. A car helps when visiting smaller towns and villages that sit away from the main rail lines.
Near Leuna, the district is home to one of the largest chemical plant complexes in Germany, first built during World War One to produce synthetic materials. The site is so large that it looks like a small city when seen from a distance.
