St. Mary's church

The red brick church features a main nave with five bays, a transept, and detailed architectural elements characteristic of northern German religious buildings.

Construction began around 1180 under Prince Jaromar I, with the church consecrated in 1193 as a Benedictine convent before becoming a parish church in 1380.

The church walls display complete Romanesque paintings from floor to ceiling, making it the only church in northern Germany with such extensive medieval decorations.

Visitors can access the church from April through October between 10:00 and 16:00, with guided tours available through telephone reservation.

The north tower clock face displays 61 minutes instead of 60, resulting from incorrect repairs following storm damage in 1983.
