Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden, Coastal lagoon in Vorpommern-Rügen District, Germany
Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden is a shallow lagoon with irregular shorelines and the Pulitz peninsula extending into its waters. The body consists of brackish water that creates a distinctive environment between inland and coastal features.
The lagoon took shape through natural coastal changes and was separated from its larger neighbor by an embankment built in 1869. This isolation created distinct conditions that shaped the body of water into what it is today.
The waters of this lagoon sustain local fishing traditions, with numerous fish species inhabiting its brackish environment despite water quality concerns.
A circular trail starting from Lietzow makes a complete loop around the lagoon, taking about two to three hours to walk. The path works well for walkers and birdwatchers visiting in any season.
The water holds much less salt than the Baltic Sea because it is cut off from it and fed mainly by streams. These conditions support a specialized ecosystem that differs from what typical sea bays contain.
