Schloss Ralswiek, Renaissance castle in Ralswiek, Germany
Schloss Ralswiek is a Renaissance Revival castle standing on a hill above the Großer Jasmunder Bodden with two towers featuring conical roofs and a central cupola at the entrance. The rectangular building functions today as a hotel with rooms overlooking the water and houses a restaurant serving regional food.
The castle was built between 1894 and 1896 by manufacturer Hugo Sholto Graf Douglas and replaced a single-story building that previously occupied the site. Berlin architect Gustav Stroh designed the new structure in this style for the new owner.
The interior spaces display notable Art Nouveau elements designed by architect Henry van de Velde, including preserved stained glass windows and original door fittings. These details give the castle its distinctive character today.
The hotel offers rooms with water views and direct access to dining facilities serving regional specialties. Visitors should note that the grounds sit on a hill and are easily reached on foot, though sturdy footwear is recommended.
A natural amphitheater at the castle's base hosts a summer festival that draws thousands of spectators to the water's edge. This event brings history and entertainment together at this location overlooking the Bodden.
