Epprechtstein, Mountain and geotope in Kirchenlamitz, Germany
Epprechtstein is a mountain in the northern Fichtel range that rises to 798 meters with steep granite rock faces and castle ruins crowning its summit. The distinctive stone formations and remains of fortifications dominate the peak and surrounding terrain.
The mountain was first recorded in 1248 under the name Eckebretstein when it supported a castle. The fortress changed hands through various owners until troops under Vogt Henry of Plauen destroyed it during the 16th century.
The granite maze at the mountain's base draws visitors to wander and pause at its focal point. An obelisk in the center carries inscriptions meant to encourage reflection during the walk.
The steep rock faces require sturdy hiking shoes and careful footing on the ascent. Visitors should expect changing weather conditions and allow time to explore the summit remains and surrounding terrain.
The mountain is surrounded by roughly twenty quarries that have extracted stone over many decades. Three of these extraction sites remain active today, continuing to supply stone for regional construction work.
