Epprechtstein Castle

Epprechtstein Castle consists of ruins standing on a granite slab at 798 meters elevation, with an old tower house and stairs ascending to an observation platform. The structure uses the natural rock formation as its base, providing views of the surrounding landscape from above.

Between 1150 and 1180, the castle was built using ashlar stone and rusticated masonry techniques, serving as a strategic outpost above the settlement below. These construction methods reflect medieval building practices in the region.

The site takes its name from the mountain where it stands and is appreciated by visitors who seek views from above. It forms part of local identity and draws people interested in exploring the region's past.

The ruins are accessible via multiple hiking trails, including a beginner-friendly route of around 3 kilometers and a longer route for experienced hikers of about 20 kilometers. The site features well-marked paths and suits various fitness levels.

The summit area contains fourteen granite quarries, with three still actively extracting Epprechtstein granite while others remain closed. This continuing industrial activity alongside the historic ruins creates an unusual landscape.
