Ausbesserungswerk München-Freimann, Railway workshop complex in Freimann, Germany.
The Ausbesserungswerk München-Freimann is a large industrial complex in northern Munich that was used for maintaining and repairing railway vehicles. The site contains multiple factory halls, workshops, and a water tower that date from its period of active operation.
The site began in 1916 as an artillery factory for Krupp but was converted to a railway repair facility in 1925 by Deutsche Reichsbahn. It then developed into a major center for maintaining railway vehicles in Munich.
The name refers to the maintenance and repair of railway vehicles, reflecting its industrial purpose. Today visitors can see the preserved hall structures that show how workers were once organized to perform their tasks.
The complex sits along Lilienthalallee in northern Munich and is accessible by public transport. Many areas today house retail shops and event spaces that are open for visitors to enter.
For many years this was the only place in Germany where electric locomotives and railcars could be repaired until the workshop closed in 1995. This special status ended when railway technology and priorities shifted.
