Brücke des Friedens, Prestressed concrete road bridge in Magdeburg, Germany.
The Peace Bridge spans the Old Elbe with two separate structures roughly 227 and 230 meters long. It carries Federal Highway 1 with two traffic lanes, pedestrian paths, and a cycling lane on the northern side.
The southern section opened in 1902 as a wooden structure and underwent multiple reconstructions throughout the century before being replaced by steel construction in 1998. These changes reflect the city's complex past.
The northern bridge displays a sculpture called 'Daphne' at its eastern end, created by Dutch artist Auke de Vries. Visitors encounter this artwork naturally while crossing.
The best way to explore the bridge is on foot or by bicycle to enjoy the artwork and river views. Use the separate cycling lane on the northern side for safe passage.
The structure uses a continuous beam system that allows specific transitions between bridge sections while supporting varying structural heights. This technical approach is what makes the bridge notably resilient and long-lasting.
