Emssperrwerk, Flood barrier between Jemgum and Moormerland, Germany.

The Emssperrwerk is a flood defense structure on the Ems River that uses several large gates to control water flow between the river and the North Sea. The construction consists of seven gates of varying sizes, with the central one designed to allow passage for large vessels.

The structure was completed in 1986 after several years of construction to protect the region from dangerous storm surges. The project emerged from the realization that the coastal area needed better defenses against extreme water levels.

The structure reflects how local communities have adapted to living alongside water and tidal forces. Visitors can observe the engineering solutions that became necessary for settlement in this low-lying region.

Visitors should be aware that gate operations follow a set schedule based on water levels and vessel traffic. It is advisable to check operating times beforehand to plan the best time for a visit.

The central opening spans approximately 60 meters and was specifically designed for large ships built by the region's shipbuilding industry. This size allows ocean-going vessels to travel upriver for construction or repair work.
