Burg Altwinnenden, Medieval castle ruins in Winnenden, Germany.
Burg Altwinnenden is a castle ruin perched on a hilltop near Winnenden with a stone keep dating to the 12th century as its main feature. The site consists of several levels with the well-preserved keep standing as the most visible element of the former fortification.
The Lords of Winnenden established this castle in 1181 as a stronghold of their regional power. Following their decline, the structure was largely demolished between 1536 and 1538, with only the keep surviving this destruction.
The site reflects the influence of the Lords of Winnenden and their control over the surrounding area during medieval times. Walking through the ruins, you can sense how important this location was for the local population.
The ruins are accessible via several hiking trails that depart from Winnenden and form a network of well-marked paths. Wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is hilly and some sections involve steep climbs.
The castle keep was built so solidly that it withstood demolition while everything else was torn down. This sturdy construction makes the tower the only visible reminder of what once was a substantial fortress.
