Walter II von Streußlingen became the first documented owner of Burg Arnstein in the 12th century, adopting the name Walter von Arnstein for his lineage.
The castle complex stands as a testament to medieval military architecture in the Harz Mountains, displaying construction techniques from different historical periods.
The ruins can be accessed through multiple walking paths starting from the villages of Sylda and Harkerode, with shorter routes available for quick visits.
The castle underwent substantial modifications in 1530 and 1563, including a two-story elevation increase and reconstruction of the kitchen and church sections.
