Schalkenburg

Schalkenburg, Archaeological site in Quenstedt, Germany

Schalkenburg is an archaeological site in the Harzvorland region containing settlement layers from multiple historical periods. The grounds include visible floor plans, excavated areas, and a series of post structures that visitors can explore along marked pathways.

Major excavations between 1967 and 1986 revealed multiple settlement levels, including a circular ditch from the Neolithic period and fortified areas from the Bronze Age. These findings show the site was inhabited and used across thousands of years.

This location served as a center for craftsmanship and daily life during the Bronze Age, where residents worked metal and built their homes. Visitors can follow the excavated floor plans and hearths to understand how communities organized their living spaces here.

The site features marked pathways and is openly accessible, allowing visitors to explore the grounds at their own pace. Signage and maintained trails make it easy to navigate through the different areas.

Archaeologists uncovered five parallel oval post structures with defined entrances that may have served astronomical purposes during the earliest settlement phase. This arrangement is uncommon and suggests organized building knowledge that was rare for its era.
