Kriegshoven Castle, Medieval fortress in Heimerzheim, Swisttal, Germany.
Kriegshoven Castle is a water castle in Heimerzheim, a village in the Swisttal municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia. The complex consists of several buildings with defensive towers and thick stone walls, all surrounded by a moat.
The castle originated in the Middle Ages as a fortified residence and was substantially rebuilt in the 16th century. A further renovation in the 19th century shaped much of what can be seen today.
Kriegshoven shows the regional style of Rhenish water castles, with towers and a moat that are still visible from the outside. The setting in open countryside gives a clear sense of how a fortified manor once dominated the local landscape.
The castle is privately owned and not open to the public, but its exterior is visible from the walking paths nearby. A short walk from the center of Heimerzheim is enough to get a good view of the complex.
Although the castle is now used as a private residence, it has kept its medieval moat, which is relatively rare for a building that has been continuously adapted over the centuries. The moat is clearly visible from the paths outside and gives the whole complex a distinctive appearance.
