Burg Hemmerich, Medieval castle in Hemmerich, Germany
Burg Hemmerich is a castle complex in Bornheim featuring stone walls, towers, and a central courtyard set within extensive grounds. The buildings were reconstructed in Neo-Renaissance style after being damaged and now sit within a maintained park.
The castle was built on the foundations of a Roman settlement and belonged to Knight Albero von Hemberg around 1210. Major renovations took place between 1729 and 1733, though subsequent fires later led to its reconstruction as a residential villa.
The castle reflects Rhine Baroque architectural traditions shaped by regional noble families of the area. Visitors can observe these building influences in the structures that remain today.
The castle sits along the Roman Canal hiking trail and can be explored from the outside without entrance charges. The surrounding park invites walkers to stroll and linger in the open spaces.
The site suffered at least three major fires in 1869, 1906, and 1945 that fundamentally changed its appearance. Following the final destruction, architect Wilhelm Graf Mörner completely rebuilt the manor house according to Neo-Renaissance designs.
