Kitzburg

Kitzburg is a water castle in Walberberg featuring a rectangular layout with four corner pavilions positioned on a square island. The structure sits within water-filled moats and stone walls, accessible by three separate bridges.

Defensive structures at this location trace back to the 13th century. The present building took its recognizable form when Count Franz Egon von Fürstenberg carried out major reconstruction in the late 1600s.

For decades, the castle served as a monastic community center where people gathered for educational retreats and meetings. Visitors can sense the spiritual heritage embedded in this rural setting.

The castle remains privately owned and visits require advance permission from the property owner. The exterior and its distinctive water fortifications can be viewed from the surrounding area without special access.

Archaeological digs uncovered remains of a Roman country estate dating from the 2nd to 5th century. These discoveries reveal that farming and settlement activity in this area stretch back to Roman times.
